Date of Meeting: June 9, 2001

The meeting was called to order at 1:05 p.m. by President Amy Ruell. The minutes were read and accepted.

Amy announced that our August demonstration would be by Shelly Proulx will talk about making food labels and package directions available on the web. In September Maria Rueters will be demonstrating Homesite, a web designing tool.

Amy announced that there is an alternative to Internet Explorer which has been developed, called the Freedom Box. There are hardware and software versions of this product available. She stated that Mike Calvo was potentially available to demonstrate the product on July 11, 2001, and that if enough people were interested she would talk to National Braille Press about using their facility to have a special meeting on that day to demonstrate the product. We agreed that she would e-mail people on the VIBUG Mailing List, and that if enough people were interested she would make arrangements for this meeting, and notify people about the time slot for this demonstration. Amy also stated that she was hoping to arrange a demonstration of web-Braille, which is currently available via download from the Braille and Talking Book Library.

Amy told us that National Braille Press would be doing some construction in their building, and there was potentially a month we would not be able to meet. National Braille Press will try to give Amy sufficient notice so that she can notify us. We did speak about possibly arranging to meet in the library for that month, but determined that option would have to be further explored when we had more information about which month the building would not be available.

In a previous meeting we had discussed purchasing some tutorials which could be lent to people to assist them in enhancing their computer skills. Ginny volunteered to organize and manage this library once the tutorials were purchased.

Amy announced that Window-eyes 4.1 is now available from GWMicro. Also, Freedom Scientific has a free upgrade of JFW available.

We would like people to know the following: that if you turn off your computer it takes approximately three minutes for the buffer to completely empty itself of anything that is in memory. If you are running an emulation program with a screen reader, you need to make sure you have a line cursor, and not a block cursor? If you forget to take a disk out of your computer, when you re-start your system it will not function until you take that disk out and hit enter?

For our monthly demonstration, Amy Ruell discussed computer tutorials, what is new since we first talked about them, and how have they changed. Following this, our meeting adjourned at 4:00 PM.

Respectfully Submitted
