The meeting was called to order at 1:00 P.M. Since Jeanette Kutash was not present, Amy agreed to take and distribute this month's minutes. The minutes of the October meeting were read and accepted without modification.
Amy announced that the holiday party would occur at the next VIBUG meeting on December 9 and that Jeanette Kutash was coordinating the event. Please contact Jeanette at (617) 376-6341 or e-mail her at jkutash@mediaone.net to let her know what you will be bringing to share. In addition to food, we will also need volunteers to set up and clean up.
Amy also announced the demonstrations for the January and February meetings. Bill Kilroy from Freedom Scientific will be demonstrating Open Book version 5 in January and David McCallum will demonstrate ZoomText in February. We are also trying to obtain commitments from GW Micro and Humanware to demonstrate Window-eyes and the voicenote, the new competitor to the Braille & Speak. respectively.
Meeting attendees were also reminded that renewal notices would soon be sent and were encouraged to continue their support of VIBUG by sending their 2001 memberships.
Jeffrey Turner noted that he had heard some complaints recently that VIBUG was too technical and advanced for beginners. He and Bob both offered to answer any tech support questions which beginners felt uncomfortable raising at meetings. Jeffrey can be reached at (617) 522-5202 and people can call Bob at (781) 646-8528.
During the question and answer portion of the meeting, lively discussion occurred about the relative merits of cable or dsl vs. dial-up connections, the capacity and limits of using adaptive technology to access a Mac, and configuration issues when using Zone Alarm. Bill Raeder, who announced that NBP now has a dsl connection to the Internet, encouraged Amy to contact Eileen Curran to investigate the possibility of allowing VIBUG to connect to this service. Participants were also notified about some recently identified computer viruses and were encouraged to obtain and/or keep their virus scanning programs up-to-date.
Al Sten-Clanton gave a demonstration of JFW script writing. The meeting was adjourned at 3/40 P.M.
Respectfully Submitted,
Amy Ruell, VIBUG President
