Minutes of December 2014 VIBUG meeting

Where: MIT, 77 Mass. Ave., Building 5, Room 134, Cambridge, MA
When: December 13, 2014

President Amy Ruell called the meeting to order at 1:00 PM. All present introduced themselves.

Minutes: Secretary Jerry Berrier read the minutes of our November meeting. They were accepted without change.

Amy spoke briefly of her years as president of VIBUG. She thanked officers and members for their steadfast help, and she encouraged us all to step out of our comfort zones and volunteer to do what we can to promote the continued success of VIBUG.

Announcements

Amy said she and Bob Resnick have purchased a MacBook Air for VIBUG, as agreed upon by the membership.

We now have a VIBUG announce list on Freelists. All who were on the previous Google list have been subscribed to the new list, which is an open one-way list.

:Beginning in January we will have a new VIBUG support list open only to members.

Our VIBUG bank account access will be updated to include only Jerry and Bob.

Amy said Jerry plans to hold an officers meeting in January.

Jerry has asked Amy to continue screening e-mail and phone inquiries for the time being.

MIT students working on the Finger Reader will update us soon. Amy said they have decided to pair the device with iOS rather than Android.

Amy recently appeared on Accessible World’s technology program broadcast via the internet.

Our VIBUG post-holiday party will take place on January 10 at the Corrib Restaurant in West Roxbury. There will be door prizes. Each member will receive two numbers for the drawing, and each non-member participant will receive one.

GWMicro has a new beta of WindowEyes.

Apple has recently updated Yosemite and iOS.

Several key figures at Serotek have recently left the company.

Presentations

Following the computer question and answer period, there were three presentations.

David Kingsbury demonstrated the KNFB Reader iOS app.

Winston Chen, the developer of the VoiceDream iOS app, discussed new features , and he also demonstrated a beta of an accessible text editor he is creating. Amy will e-mail information for those who may wish to sign up as beta testers.

A representative from Fidelity spoke very briefly. Amy will e-mail details to VIBUG members regarding web accessibility testing.

The meeting was adjourned at 4:00 PM.
